Technology has advanced so much in the past years that today it is really difficult to manage without it. From helping us wake up in the morning to doing most of the tasks during the day, technology plays a vital role.
Technology has simplified our lives. Almost every task we do in our lives each day is an example of technology at work in some way.
When we look at the pros and cons of technology, we must balance the benefits with the potential for harm to help shape a world where everyone can have the chance to pursue what they want to experience in life.
Cons of Technology
It creates dependencies.
Technology today has made us all very dependent on tools and devices for a lot of work. We do not have to remember things now as everything is available in a pool of database. Even calculators have reduced our ability to mentally perform calculations or solve equations. All we have to do is just punch the numbers in the calculator and we have our required answers within seconds. This has for sure made life easier but other risks come with it, for example, our dependency on technology creates a decline in human capital and hence lead to unemployment. For example, replacing humans with a self-service touch screen at cafes.
Unnecessary individual freedom.
Technology has made most of us independent such as now to cook something we do not have to go to cooking class or ask someone the recipe. All we need to do is go on the internet and look up the recipe. Same is with some things as well. But with this boon comes the bane that now people can have all the information they need at the comfort of their homes. Which means people can now make things like an atomic bomb in their garage with the help of the internet. There some be some sort of regulations on the use of technology for our safety.
Technology creates a social disconnect.
Technology has reduced human interaction. Now people can connect through the internet and social media instead of face-to-face human interaction. Even tho now you can stay connected to everyone all the time with social media but this has resulted in a lot of people feeling isolated and lonely. Reduced physical social connections can be problematic for one’s mental health.
Mental illnesses and disorders in humans may be rising due to the overuse of technology.
Technology can be addictive.
Technology can give you a charge that is alike to what drugs or alcohol can give when you take them for the first time. Video games, streaming movies, television shows, and many more information components today can make people make decisions to use these even when it can harm their lives. People are ruining their relationships because they would prefer to stay connected to technology.
We have become so used to smartphones and computers nowadays that they are our go-to resources for almost everything. When we look at the pros and cons of technology, it is important to examine how it is shaping our lives today. We must be disciplined and control our dependence on technology for everything. Our perspectives will help to shape the next generation and how they develop tech to fit their world.
